The Boreas Intertie project is being developed to provide an outlet for new renewable energy generation, and improve power system operation, in Montana and the northern Rocky Mountain region.

The Boreas line will link the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), facilitate energy transmission between the northern tier states, and add reliability and opportunity for new energy generation in Montana and the northern Rocky Mountain region.

The project route will follow existing transmission line corridors in order to minimize impacts on the environment and communities of Montana and Wyoming.
